History

Highland Hose Company Number 5 is a volunteer fire company located in Nyack, New York. Our company was founded in 1895 when it was determined by the residents of Nyack that the hill section of Nyack required it's own Company and hose cart for fire protection. Highland Hose Co. No. 5 is a member of the eight Company Nyack Fire Department, and of the Nyack Joint Fire District.

Highland Hose proudly exists in it's Company owned building, with it being one of only two buildings that the Company has ever occupied. The 1910 building with it's 1984 addition is operated and maintained by Company fundraising. The interior with it's tin ceilings, wide wooden paneling, and horizontal sliding door in the antique truck bay are all original and are a tribute to the men and women who have made up the Company membership past and present.

Highland Hose is very proud of it's vehicles. Since the Company's formation in 1895, the Company has had only four apparatus, which is a testimony to the continued care given to these vehicles. Highland's third apparatus, a 1949 Ahrens-Fox, was taken out of service in 1986 after 37 years of service. This apparatus was originally purchased in part with some funding contributed by the Company membership. Upon the truck's retirement, the Village of Nyack transferred ownership to Highland Hose where the truck remains today, still fully functional.

Highland Hose established a monument in front of the firehouse to remember all members past, present, and future, who have continued to uphold the proud tradition of the volunteer fire service, and of Highland Hose. The inscription; "Dedicated to the Men and Women of Highland Hose Company No. 5 and the proud history they continue to write." is an example of this Company's dedication to the provision of service to the community.
